Turner County Elementary School

The Turner County Elementary School decided that it would be in the best interest of its children to reduce class size eight years ago, several years before the law mandated it. The average class size at Turner County Elementary School is currently between 14-16 children. A minimum of 6 computers resides in every full classroom, with 5 computers in every other room. Each one of these computers has internet access, Encarta on line, and the World Book Encyclopedia. GSAMS provide students with "virtual field trips" which allow the students to "travel" to places they wouldn't ordinarily be able to go, such as the Atlanta Zoo and the GA Music Hall of Fame. GSAMS also allows teachers to take courses from schools such as ABAC and VSU, with out having to travel at night. The elementary school has recently started a character education program, modeled after Westpoint Elementary's very successful character building programs. The K-12 also participates in an accelerated reading program. The students do a variety of community services, such as participating in "Pennies for Prevention", raising money for abused children, and jumping for the Heart Association. Each child is encouraged to participate in art, music, chorus, and band.

The Turner County Elementary School participates in book day. On book day, a volunteer will come and read the children a book and the children participate in activities that coincide with the story. This picture was taken on Cat-in-the-Hat book day.
The Ashburn Fire Department took a moment to explain the importance of fire safety to the elementary school classes.
Some of the elementary school children took a field trip to the local Pizza Hut, where they learned how to make pizza. It was a tasty experience!
