Walking
& Driving Tour
Turner County is widely known for
its large collection of historic homes and the preservation of its past.
Several buildings in Turner County are listed on the National Historic
Registry. These buildings and other homes have been brought together to
form a unique walking and driving tour. Brochures giving a brief history
of each home, are available at the Ashburn-Turner County Chamber of
Commerce. Turner Countys Old Jail is included on this tour along with
one of the oldest outdoor tabernacles in the state of Georgia.

World's Largest Peanut
Turner Countys community was
built around agriculture. At one time, peanuts were the number one cash
crop in Georgia and were largely responsible for keeping many of the
Turner County families fed. In honor of the importance of the peanut, one
of Ashburn's citizens erected what some call the "Worlds Largest
Peanut. This monument, approximately 20 feet tall, can clearly be seen
from I-75 and is a daily reminder where our roots come from.
Arts Council
We have been a member of the Arts
Experiment Station for 24 years. In conjunction with our local Arts
Council, the experiment station is responsible for bringing in 8 major
Broadway productions to our area each year. In the past, Turner Countians
have had the opportunity to view performances such as The Last Apistle and
Mac Frampton and the Hollywood Hills Orchestra.
Fire
Ant Festival
Each year during the fourth weekend in
March, all of Turner County comes together to celebrate our annual Fire
Ant Festival. With events ranging from a pet parade to a poker run,
everyone in Turner County is involved. One of the most anticipated events
is the strawberry cook off, where each participant gets a chance to show
of her (or his!) special strawberry recipe. The best part comes after the
judging when the audience gets the opportunity to sample the entries! Yum.
After events on Thursday and Friday nights, Saturday started early with a
5k Run and Ant Walk. Throughout the day festivities included events such
as the Fire Ant Calling Contest, arts and crafts vendors. The day ended
with a street dance enjoyed by children and adults. This is one festival
you dont want to miss.
Christmas Celebrations
Every year Turner Countians gather together to participate in our
Christmas Parade. The celebration is kicked off by a lighting of the tree
ceremony. Afterwards, each merchant in town participates in a merchants'
open house where door prizes, discounts, and refreshments are shared among
friends. This year the children were visited by Santa and his elves. The
following day brought the parade. The parade came to an end with Santa
throwing out candy to the good little boys and girls.
